SD Flash Cards - Speed and Specs

Post by tomczak »

Would anyone understand the difference between different SD cards? For instance, what's the difference between: SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC, MMCplus, HC MMCplus cards? How about the speed ratings? How do I know what the writing speed of the camera is and how to choose the card speed that could match it? Is it relevant at all? Cheers!

Maciej,

This link should give you most of the information you need about SD cards, speeds and variants:

Many thanks - the article does explain a lot. Here is another question: is there any particular reason why an SD card of the same class is any better than a MicroSD card (with SD converter)? If there is none, why wouldn't compact cameras, where space is at premium, use MicroSD(HC) which are just as popular as the full-size SD?

Cheers.

Maciej,

My opinion - I can't quote any references - is that the SD card is preferred for applications in which there may be frequent removal and refitting of the card on the basis that it is more robust.
SD cards are perhaps a little cheaper - but I don't suppose that's a factor.
As fas as I can determine transfer rates and maximum capacities are the same.

Mike.
