a false mask image

Post by davidh »

Hi,

I created a range mask on an image, let's call it img.
I clicked right upper Apply then pressed the minus key on the numeric keyboard to zoom out the created new mask image, which generated another mask image completely black. So now there are two mask images - the normal one and the false one completely black. The following three scenarios describe problems that arise from this.

1. Scenario
If I close both mask images or only the false one and then click again on the lower left Apply to reapply the mask, the img gets covered with uniform very grainy mask instead of the one created by the mask tool.

2. Scenario
If I click on the lower left Apply before closing the mask images, the correct mask is reapplied.
But if I close the false mask image before I click the upper right Apply, the img gets cleared (of the correct mask) and no new mask image is generated.

3. Scenario
If I close the normal mask image before I click the upper right Apply, the new mask is generated correctly and at the same time the black mask gets closed.

The only way to get rid of the uniform grainy mask created on the img is to click on the upper right Apply - this does not generate another mask image, this just clears the img, as describer in the 3.scenario.
All this problems happen only when the minus key (also + and even * ) on numeric keyboard is pressed (after upper right Apply had been pressed) with the focus still on Mask tool window. Clicking on another window to make it active before pressing any of these keys prevents this behavior. Interestingly, displaying tooltip on one of the mask tool window buttons also prevents this behavior but only as long as the tooltip is displayed.
The same happens with mask Brightness Curve and probably other mask tools but I have not tested them.
Has anybody else encountered this behavior?

I run the latest PWP on Windows 7.

By the way, is it possible to set up somewhere the zoom size of the newly created images so that I did not have to zoom them out?
Thanks.

Latest PWP on Vista Home Premium.

David,

I can replicate the 'false mask image' by following the steps you described.

However, if I left click on img and then press the minus key - no problem.

I can also replicate the problem on my machine, latest PWP and WinXP SP3.
That grainy mask does not seem to be uniform on the image i choosed, but i can not see where the structure comes form, it does not seem to repeat structures in the image.

The "false" mask does not ask to save when closeing, the "real" one does.

Mike, Dieter,
thanks for testing and confirming.

Mike,
this left click on the img you mention is what I meant by making another window active. In fact, it can be any other window open in PWP.

If the mask tool window is clicked on back again (after clicking elsewhere), there is no problem any more. After applying the mask with the right upper Apply, the mask tool window simply must loose focus before minus, plus or asterix keys on numeric keypoard are pressed, then there is no problem.
