Avoiding recalculation after OK preceded by Apply?

Would it be possible to avoid re-processing downstream images after you first Apply some change and then, if satisfied, you just confirm it by clicking OK?
What I have in mind is a kind of optimization made some time ago after a bypassed step was removed, here:
