In some transformations with color pickers, such as Tint, Filter, Posterize, you can use the Hand feature only until you open a color picker. With a color picker open the Hand is not available until you close it again. Making the transformation dialog active by a click does not help.
In Composite it works differently. After you click the prewiev to pick a color, the transformation dialog becomes automatically active and the probe cross changes to the Hand. This is more convenient when you pick the right color at one go.
Someone might preffer switching between the probe and the Hand manualy: when you click the transformation dialog, you can use the Hand, when you click the Overlay Color picker, you pick a color. This might be more convenient when you need more probing in the search for the right color.
I would personaly prefer the way the Composite goes. What do others think?
The Probe or the Hand?

I'm not sure if you are aware of this or not, but you can switch to the hand at any time by holding down the Alt key.
Transformations that have more than one color setting have no way to tell which one you want to select unless you click on the corresponding color picker.
