Save mask as alpha channel in PNG?

Is it possible or feasible that when saving an image in the PNG format, a mask for that image could be saved as the PNG alpha channel? If that is feasible, being able to do the reverse would also be nice.

The Transparent PNG transformation lets you save a mask as the alpha channel. There is currently no reverse operation.
