Image Averaging to Reduce Noise

Post by JayF »

Hello:

I would like to use "Stack Images" in PWPro 4.0 to reduce noise. Am I correct in assuming that I would just load the 4 images into the "Stack Images" dialogue and leave the "Amount" sliders set to 100%?

Cheers! Jay

Hello JayF,

Take a look at http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials.htm.
It has a great tutorial about noise reduction by image averaging and it has a lot of other tutorials and techniques.
He uses photoshop but it's easy to use with PWP.

Hello Willy Nijenhuis:

Thanks. In fact, it was the "Cambridge In Colour" tutorial that generated my question about image averaging with the stack images transform. I just happened to be in the midst of some night photography and was looking for some noise reduction techniques.

It seems to work quite well.

Cheers! Jay

Yes, averaging to reduce noise does work but it has the same iimitation as HDR. There must be zero movement during the time the shots are taken. Even a gentle breeze will move leaves, tree limbs, etc that will lead to a soft photograph.
