mask overlap with mask paint tool

Post by davidh »

The mask Paint tool does not seem to reflect settings when used with mask Overlap. The attached image shows an example of Subtract and Overlap with the settings: Radius 10, Transparency 50, Softness 50, Spacing 0, All pixels, Accumulate.
However the Overlap result is always the same with whatever settings when used with mask Paint tool.
PWP 7.0.11. 32 bit.

The Mask Paint Tool is applying the same operation in overlap mode that as with other tools, namely to clear everything outside where the mask is painted. Admittedly this is a useless operation when applied with the paint tool. I am open to other suggestions about how it could work, but anything else besides what it currently does would not really be consistent. It could clear all the mask outside what you paint and not just within the bounding box of the brush, but this would hardly be more useful. I am not sure what effect you are trying for or what you were expecting, but maybe a different mode like subtract would work better.

I just come across it when using Paint with Subtract and was curious what might Paint with Overlap do differently. I did not expect any concrete behavior and, to be honest, I myself have no idea what it should do differently. I guess I would have expected something similar to Subtract and the fact that the settings did not do anything, not even with the transparency and softness made me wonder what I do not understand about it. Anyway, now do. Thanks for the clarification, Jonathan.
