Crashes

Post by Robert Schleif »

For the past few days, while in extended (>3 hr) sessions with PWP 8.0.541 the computer stops responding to the mouse and keyboard. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing, and I must power off, restart, and in restarting, problems are encountered and I select continuie startup anyway. Restart is then successful. If I then shut down normally and restart, the restart is normal without problems. This problem has not occurred over a two day period when the computer was on and I had not explicitly started any apps. Also, the problem has not (yet) occurred while running something like Microsoft Word for three hours. Does it seem possible that PWP is at fault, perhaps overrunning a buffer, or does it seem more likely that either my hardware or the OS is generating the problem?

Hard to say as there are so many possibilities (a buggy Windows update, hardware driver issues, CPU/memory/disk/display adapter hardware problems, an issue with some other application running in the background, PWP problems, etc.) -- it's probably good practice in any case to save you work at regular intervals although PWP does autosave the workspace whenever you click OK on a transformation. PWP regularly uses a lot more memory than MS Word so there are ways it could fail when Word does not.

Try to keep track of what you were last doing the next time it happens as that can be a clue. If you have another computer you could try to see if that also crashes the same way.
