feature request : Exiftool integration

Post by pierrelabreche »

1. Allow the exiftool installed with PWP to be invoked at the command line by making it a recognized system command.

2. The Path environment variable should be made such that exiftool that comes with PWP is found

3. If possible, the user should be prompted for the preferred location to install exiftool. If user already has an exiftool version installed somewhere, could this folder location be reused ?

It would be useful to let the user update exiftool version independently of the release of PWP.

Well, you can go to exiftool.org and download the latest version at any time, and place it wherever you need it to be.

Will a new version of exiftool be used automatically by PWP for its own integration?

PWP uses the version of ExifTool located in the same folder PWP is installed in. It is not a good idea to substitute a new version of ExifTool for the one I have integrated with PWP in case there are differences that could cause PWP to stop working. This happened recently, for example, when they changed the form in which ExifTool was distributed. I do update the integrated version of ExifTool periodically when issuing new PWP releases. Mostly the changes are minor bug fixes or extensions to support new metadata items.

If you want to do something out of the ordinary with ExifTool or use a newer version, just download, install and use a separate version from the one used by PWP as this will reduce the possibility of messing up PWP.
