I'm a new user of the image management program, IMatch. I encountered a problem with thumbnails that I brought up on the IMatch forum.

It appears PWP doesn't update the thumbnail or preview image when it saves a file. Is this correct or is there another explanation?

Re: Thumbnail Problem
I should have added that the files were saved as 48 bit TIFs with LZW compression.

Re: Thumbnail Problem
Cliff,
I had a simular problem some time ago. But with tiff-files processed from Pentax *.pef-files with PWP.
The problem was, that the Makers Notes contain another thumbnails. PWP preserves the Makers Notes with tiff. So a tiff contains three images:
the tiff, a thumb and the image within the makers notes. That causes the trouble.
(see the IMatch bug forum)
Now with the K-7 I switched from *.pef to *.dng (original Pentax) and the problem is solved, because the tiff-files derived from the *.dng have less exif-Data.

Re: Thumbnail Problem
Hi Winfried,
Thanks for the information. That makes sense to me. I'm using Nikon nef files. The one causing the trouble was taken by a D1x. I guess I need to go back to the IMatch forum.
Thanks very much,
Cliff

Re: Thumbnail Problem
Cliff,
For what it's worth, I have been using iMatch for probably 2 years now with PWP and I've not seen this.
I have a Canon and convert the RAWs to tiff right away and save all steps as 48 bit tiff. I don't use compression because other programs I use can't deal with it. It also isn't that effective sometimes. I just get more selective about the intermediate steps I really need to save.
Here's a shot in the dark for what it's worth: Could there be anything going on with embedded color profiles?
When Photomatix first came on the scene, I was having trouble with it and PWP, and contacted the Photomatix support. They knew of the problem but were not able to find it.
It turns out I was also much less experienced at the time and I was screwing up and not putting color profiles in my files.
I passed this info along to the Photomatix folks and they were able to generate a patch quickly.
They also provided great service and they actually gave me a free license.
I wonder if something similar is going on with thumbnails. Probably this idea is way off, but maybe worth it if other avenues don't work.
