Just an observation: if Raw file is opened in the Raw dialog and then OK is hit, the progress window includes the Cancel button. If the image has a sidecar file and the Raw dialog is bypassed, there is no Cancel button in the progress window.

That is correct. Raw is loaded in several phases. Some phases cannot be cancelled and thus no cancel button is displayed during those phases.
