Forum Post Notification

Not a PWP question, however....

Although I visit the forum quite regularly (only sign in when wishing to post) and I don't mind at all receiving notices of a topic entry, I'm just curious when/why e-mail Forum Post Notifications are sent out.

I have posted a new topic or added comment to an already active thread and received the appropriate notice when a response is posted - as expected.
I also, however, receive notices on topics that I have not instigated nor added to. I have also gone for some time not receiving any notice even though topics have had activity (but not by me).

Do notices merely go out for all threads for a certain period after one logs into the forum, as opposed to a notice related only to a thread that someone posts to?

As stated, I am not complaining about receiving notices, just curious on the "inner workings".

I'll be very interested in the answer to this question. I've been a member of the PWP forum community since 2004. The members section shows that in the 4 years since April 2009 when the forum was revamped, only 23 members (including Jonathan and Kiril) have initiated more posts than I have (quite surprising to me since I have averaged but one post every two months).

But, I have NEVER received a e-mailed Forum Post Notification. Guess I must have "un-checked" a box during the registration process. lol

On another topic: can't tell you how tickled I am this week to not be tied to an Adobe product. Those who are, are going bonkers on other websites.

phpBB is a free bulletin board system that we installed on our web site a while back - I don't really know how it works internally, but notifications do seem to be haphazard at best.

To manage your notifications, log in and click on User Control Panel - then click on Manage Subscriptions.

There is also a checkbox when you enter a new message in the Options tab called "Notify me when a reply is posted".

If you note, post notifications include the following message above the link to the topic:

" . . . You can use the following link to view the last unread reply, no more notifications will be sent until you visit the topic. "

Of course only visits while you are signed on count, because other visits can't be credited to a particular person. So not visiting a topic resets your subscribe status. If that happens, you must set it back manually to again receive notification. This can be done at the bottom of the screen for each forum in which you are interested.

Perhaps this feature makes sense on a very busy board where you would otherwise be inundated with a high volume of messages. I don't think it does for our message board, but unfortunately there are no options to override this feature as far as I know.

Thank-you Jonathan and Kiril for the clarification.

Doug, I too share your thoughts on the recent developments with Adobe. I fear, however, that this method (perhaps with a more palatable price structure) will be adopted by others, should things calm down after some months/years.
