If an images is just modified by one of the tools and I just do a normal save "ctrl S" than the original images is overwritten.
For example if retouche a scanned images with the speck removal tool and I just do a "ctrl s" the original file is overwritten,
which I seldom want.
Is it possible to have here the same mechanism that generates a new name?

Only transformations generate the result in a new copy. Miscellaneous tools are not transformations and work straight on the original. You have to use "Save as" command. I think there is a comment on it in the documentation.
