What do know about JPEG XR file format? It seems to be gaining popularity and, at least on paper, sounds promising. Does anybody have an experience with it? Would it be useful/difficult to implement it in PWP?

I did some research and discovered this is a Microsoft-created format. It may be open but probably only supported on the Windows platform. JPG2000 seems to be very similar and maybe even superior. If I had to choose a format I would go for JPG2000. Either way, it looks like JPG will dominate for lossy compression and TIF for loss-less although JPG2000 has a loss-less compression option.
