I'm just beginning my experimenting with RAW. What are sidecars?

Sidecars are standard workflow files. Every time you convert a RAW file to an image, a sidecar file is saved next to your original RAW file, and it contains all the RAW dialog settings that you used in the RAW dialog. Sidecar files are not limited to the RAW dialog - they can contain the settings of the processing steps that you apply after the RAW development. When you save a processed file, you have a choice to save a sidecar/workflow file along with the original RAW. It can be used to repeat (or modify) the steps between the RAW and the final image.

Just a addition to Maciejs explanations:
Sidecar files are named for example DSCF1234.RAF.wfl if the original raw file is DSCF1234.RAF, the same works with JPG, respectevly.
The Sidecar files are stored in the same folder as the original file, a small icon with 3 waves (like the Workflow-Button) is shown in the PWP Browser in the image Thumbnails left bottom corner if a sidecar file is available for that specific image.
