version numbers

It seems that if an image originates from a paste operation rather than a file open operation, version numbers are not generated when saving. Is this intended?

When you paste from the clipboard as opposed to opening a file from a folder, there is no "original pathname" or other clue as to what the default name of the saved file should be. Do you have a suggestion for how this should work differently?

Possibly append v1 to whatever name the user provides, and for subsequent saves, increment the version number.

It's trickier than that, but I'll see if I can come up with something that works.
