Restoring Clipped Channels

Here is an interesting PS plugin: http://www.vicanek.de/plugins/huerestorer.htm

Did people try it or something similar? How does it perform? While I can think of replicating it in PWP, it wouldn't be easy (masking areas blown in one channel + isolating the clipped channel + replacing the the blown area with some combination of un-blown channels + hoping for the best... Is there an easier way? - the problem is common, I find.

How does Remap transformation treat input colour with a channel maxed out?

I use sometimes the Paint Tool with the Option HSV Hue only and a transparency of about 90%

(1) for restoring Hue, I will do as Winfried does with the Paint Tool set to HSV Hue Only [or HSV Hue and Saturation Only]... quick/easy... by Stamping [mouse click, slight brush relocation, and repeat.... letting the effect gradually build up to a preference] with a varying Radii Brush and 90% Transparency [50-70% Transparency for stronger changes] and 90% Softness rather than Painting [mouse click Hold-Drag].

(2) there probably should be a distinction made regarding what the goal is... (A) to recover clipped hues/saturations and/or (B) clipped textures [gray tones]... I use a completely different approach to recover or create virtual texture detail and the approach is not generally generic from one image to the next.

I did some shots last night that I know from the camera will be clipped.

You say use the Paint Tool.

What colour do I choose to paint?

Thanks - in anticipation.

TonyG...

In this message thread is a posting illustrating the removal of magenata/cyan hues from a recovered highlight CR2 conversion image that illustrates the hue color selection: http://www.dl-c.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=114.

As your image may be different, if you post a reduced resolution image version, I am sure you could get more specific help.

Also... the original OP is directed more towards color [hue/saturation] restoration than to texture [gray tone detail]... so the Color Correct and Revamp transforms may be used as well.

Texture [gray tone detail] may be best recovered with cloning from another part of the image or perhaps 'green' channel image area substitutions in the clipped HSV-V or HSL-L channel image areas.

Correction: "Revamp" should read "Remap" in the above post.... den

Thanks Den,

I now understand where you were respectively going.

Yes those recovered highlights that become pale magenta are a real bore. Now I see what you do with them.
