Masks - Colour Range Tool

Just downloaded latest version.
First, happened to stumble on a previous thread which mentioned this item - Mask > New Masks > Colour Range Tool, clicking on the X on Masks dialogue, causes PWP to crash. Appears it is still occurring and also occurs when the Cancel button is pressed.
Anyway, as there has been some changes to some of the mask dialogues, just wanting to confirm couple things -
Traditionally, if I recall correctly, when Colour Range tool was activated, the image remained clear, one would click in the image, press Contract, then follow-up with Shift + Click to continue to add to the mask.
Now, when this tool is opened, the image (left) is presented with a full (green) mask overlay. Can I presume that the routine now is to click the Contract button (to clear the overlay and see the image), then click throughout the image to identify the colours to be masked? I have tried just Contract as well as clicking once in the image (even though you can't see the image) then hitting Contract and it seems to have the same result, other than the colour scale having the "pointers" below a different colour. Neither results in any of the image being left with a mask, so not sure of the difference, if any.
And now, does Shift + Click and just Click do the same thing (when adding to the mask)? Or is one used for something the other is not used for?
I looked at the Help file associated with the dialogue, but it is not explicit on these points.
