jpg vs png

Hello,
I know it is preferable to edit .tiff formatted image files; however, sometimes it becomes necessary to work with already compressed images. In the PWP universe, is there any advantage of one compressed format over another, e.g., .jpg vs .png? I tried to search on this set of terms, but the search algorithm says vs is too short and .jpg is too common, as is .jpeg. Is there any way to force a search of a particular term, say within a smaller set found in an initial search?
