Folder Thumbnails

Not really a PWP topic but, can anyone tell me why, if I do anything with an image in Photoshop, and then save it, the icon thumbnail will subsequently show up in the Folder window as a washed out image?

If I then open that image in PWP and do another save, even if no changes have been made, the icon now looks normal.

Just curious.

Just an idea, Windows folder thumbs are probably not colour-managed (although I don't really know). If PS uses AdobeRGB and PWP converts them to sRGB (either automatically when opening, or when using Export), that may be the reason?

Image files, depending on their format, may optionally contain a thumbnail image embedded in the file. Photoshop embeds thumbnails and Windows Explorer, as far as I know, derives its thumbnail from the embedded thumbnail and not from the full image, so if the image looks washed out it has something to do with Photoshop's embedded thumbnail, possibly it does not contain an ICC profile to make it smaller. PWP does not embed thumbnails, so Windows Explorer bases its thumbnails on the full size file. I am planning to add embedded thumbnails to PWP at some point for JPEG and TIFF files as this speeds up Windows Explorer's and other programs such as FastStone's generation of thumbnails, but my first attempts at this have been unsuccessful.
