Two mask-related questions:
I can save mask as file, but how do I use file (or an open image) as a mask?
In Texture mask panel, should there be a Channel control? (I got the idea from Help).

To use an image as a mask, you click the Amount thumbnail and, if an image of the correct size and type is loaded, its name should come up at the bottom of the menu.
The help file was incorrect regarding the Texture tool.

Thanks, that actually does work - I'm not sure what I was thinking.
Here is a somewhat related issue, which I don't seem to be able to solve: I open Masks Transformation. In the first mask, I created a mask based on a previous image. Then I would like to slightly modify this mask and save it as mask #2 (to use it later on the same image). How do I do that?

You need to use two Mask transformations and base the second one on the mask from the first one.

...because the first one doesn't see the mask which is its own output, but the second one can see the output of the first one, and can modify it in up to 4 different ways. Got it - thanks!
