I wasn't so much interested in using the ramp for monitor curves, but as a simple way of generating one.

Having checked the 'half-width' patches at either end with the readout tool, they do seem to be pure black and white. I guess that you are talking about the full width patches, though the total number of patches including the end ones is equal to the number of colours in the posterize dialogue.
