Couple questions

Post by Marpel »

Am just starting to get familiar with the Beta release of PWP8. Due to circumstances, have been unable to follow along with the development over the last few months. Markedly different from how I did things with version 7, but overall quite impressive.

Not yet familiar enough to know the answers to the following:

1. In ver 7, when cloning in an image at 1:1, I would use the mouse (or Wacom pen) in my right hand while scrolling through the image, using the arrow keys with my left hand. However, I don't seem to be able to figure out how to scroll in 8, using the arrow keys, so wondering how to do this.

2. In 7, I often had multiple images open in the main image area (to compare or use for compositing/cloning etc.). And, of course, be able to reduce the size of each so many could be visible at the same time, while eliminating the browser window for more space. Although I can still have multiple images open at the same time, they are hidden behind each other, regardless of the image size. If I enlarge the browser window, each image thumbnail will show itself, side by side, but at the expense of main image area acreage. If I leave the browser window narrow enough for a single thumbnail or eliminate it with "show image only", is there a way to scroll through all the open images?

3. Reviewed the Help literature, but couldn't find complete info on the Pallet Mode tool, and am wondering exactly what it's purpose is and how to make use of it.

Thanks,

Marv

1) To scroll while cloning or, in fact, at any other time, hold down the Alt key and then you can click and drag the image.

2) If you make the thumbnails in the image browser small so it does not take up much room, you can switch from one image to another by clicking on the thumbnails. The up and down arrow keys also move from one to the next. To compare two images, use the Compare transformation.

3) In PWP 7, with multiple windows open, you could select colors using the color picker by clicking on any of the open images. In PWP 8, with only one image open at a time, there needed to be a different way to select colors from a different image, for example to color balance one image to match another. This is why there is a palette which is displayed in the color picker on the bottom half of the gray and color patches. You can use the palette tool to set palette colors and also to save and load sets of colors. You can also set and clear palette colors from within the color picker.

Thanks for the reply, Jonathan,

1. In version 7, I found using the arrow keys a bit easier, especially at 1:1 or higher zoom - sometimes up to 3 or 4:1, because the movement was exactly horizontal or vertical and I was confident I would not miss any areas. Hitting Alt and scrolling by hand requires a bit more precise hand movements (actually just discovered that the Alt key also allows scrolling by hand in PWP7 - never knew that before). Not a big deal, just a little getting used to, I guess.
Also just discovered, if an image is at 1:1 (for close inspection or similar) and the Clone tool is invoked, the image reverts to "zoom to fit" rather than stay at the zoomed size (didn't try it with other zoom factors). Is this intended? Just makes trying to find the same zoomed-in spot again a bit difficult.

2. Making the thumbnails small doesn't really work, especially if there are many open images (with three, the browser takes up a bit less than one third of the screen area), but I do like the arrow key use (actually left/right) to scroll through multiple images. That helps a great deal, thanks.

And last, I tried to do the paypal donate through your site, but it seems that I am having some difficulty. When I hit the "Donate with Paypal" button, after entering an amount, the screen just reverts to a zero amount, but it does not seem to have withdrawn the funds from my account, nor provide any notice that the transaction was successful. Could this be because I have a Canadian account and the requested funds are USD?

1. I did not intentionally disable the arrow keys for scrolling, but they are used in PWP 8 to move around the image browser, so I would have to use something else.

I have the zoom to fit issue on my things to do list. It turns out to be a little complicated to get it right.

Not sure what the Paypal donate problem is -- I have received donations from a number of other countries. Feel free to donate in whatever currency works.
