[OT] "Digital Restoration" 2d edition

Post by rfuerman »

The "Digital Restoration from Start to Finish" by Ctein is now a 2d edition. This book has been favorably mentioned before in this forum. See eg:

http://www.dl-c.com/discus/messages/2/11412.html

He uses Photoshop for most of this work, but there are many examples where he switches to PWP for the superior results, as we all know. If you scan photos, pay especial attention to the chapter on scanning prints.

Mr. Ctein (that is his full name) has a publication sale of an autographed copy, until August 15. You can order from him here:

I have the first edition & I am not related to Ctein. Happy reading & editing.

I was encouraged to buy this book by recommendations in the previous incarnation of this forum. I've found it very good indeed and pass on the recommendation to others interested in restoring old photos.

I have both editions. I also bought the second one expecting a few ilustrations of some of the new interesting PWP 5.0 features, but it seems to me that Mr.Ctein has instead retreated a bit from using PWP when compared to the first edition, which is quite a pity. The reason might be that he switched to Mac. He did not even refreshed the PWP 3.5. printscreens with the 5.0 ones in the second edition.
I think that namely for PWP users the first edition is a better source of inspiration.

for those of you who do not have the book, Mr Ctein's
"A Perfunctory Guide to Converting Photographic Film to Digital Prints"
can be found here
http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.co ... uide-i.htm
and here
http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.co ... rt-ii.html
this part ii includes discussion of "Wet (liquid immersion) film scanning" which appears to be Mr Ctein's preferred method of scanning these days.
if you have the book, see Chapter 4.
