geotagging : preserving original files identification

Post by pierrelabreche »

Observation
The documentation states
The original files are renamed by appending “_original” to their filenames.
Actually, the "_original" suffix is appended to the filetype.

Issue
Modifying the filetypes is inconvenient. In particular, the file explorer cannot display the file thumbnails.

Request
Keep the file extensions unchanged.
Either copy the originals to a "originals" subfolder or append "_original" to the filename without extension.

This is done by ExifTool and not under my control.

I see.

Could you then automate the creation of a subdirectory for the originals.
  1. Perform geotagging using ExifTool
  2. Create subdirectory "originals"
  3. Move the _original image files to the subdirectory
  4. Create an option for preserving the file types. If user enables "preserve file type", the original filetypes are restored, i.e. the suffix "_original" is removed

I have geotagged 100s of thousands of images in PWP8, in batches of 20-50 at a time (each day I go out and chase birds around). I always have the original jpg overwritten without saving a *_original file. Never had a problem or corruption of any sort. If I did, I would be annoyed but would simply reprocess the original RAW file, losing a bit of time, but no data.

Why do you want to have both???

Hi Bob, I don't understand the question Why do you want to have both?. This support request is not asking to have more files created. The request is for an optional method of saving the original files to a separate directory, whereby the original filename and extension would be unmodified.

Pierre,

Then I guess I am the one not understanding. It seems you double the number of files if you have one that is the un-tagged original and another that is geotagged, wherever they end up.

I never check the box that creates/copies the _original file in addition to the geotagged file 50 files in, 50 out.

Sorry for the confusion.

No problem ! Thanks for sharing your experience with Geotagging. I'm just starting to use the feature.
I find it awesome that users can geotag from Google Timeline directly using Google's Takeout file
