Picture window pro 8 won't open jpeg files

After several uninstalls and re installs Picture window pro 8 will not open any of my jpeg files. I make sure it's checked on install. I'm running Windows 7 professional SP1 on a 500gb SSD with 8gb ram. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

Have you installed all the system updates? JPEG support is part of Windows.

I have downloaded only the critical updates for Windows 7. I can open jpeg files on everything else except Picture Window Pro. If Windows 7 Pro can open jpeg files elsewhere I don't understand why they don't open in PWP 8.

PWP 7 used a third party library to read JPEG files. It eventually became impractical to license this library and Microsoft added a facility called WIC (Windows Imaging Component) that can read and write JPEG, TIFF and a number of other formats, and PWP 8 uses this feature -- other programs may or may not. WIC, if I recall correctly, first appeared in Windows 8 and was later retrofitted to Windows 7 via various updates, so if you don't have the right updates it may not be available. The following update might the problem:

Did PWP 8 ever read JPEG files on your computer or is this the first time you tried?

I did some Googling on this issue and found a suggested code change to get WIC to work on Windows 7. I have incorporated this change into the next release, so give that a try when I upload it -- probably within a few days.
