Saved files cannot be opened by other software

I use the Canon raw conversion program DPP4 for raw conversion and also to quickly look at the image content of directories. Some jpg or tif images saved by PWP 8 can be opened by DPP4 and others cannot. I have not yet seen what might be difference between images in the two classes. I assume that it would be desirable to have all the images saved from PWP be openable, but that you would need much more precise information to be able to address the problem. Do you have any suggestions on where to look, i.e. parameters used in a particular transformation?

Some of the Obvious Possibilities are:

Profile
Metadata
Color vs B&W
Compression method (for TIFF)
Bit Depth (for TIFF)

JPEG and TIFF files are written using Microsoft standard software, the details of which are not part of PWP 8.

It's B&W, and nothing to do with PWP.
