For PW4 and earlier users, I was able to make a fairly good mask using absolute difference, then brightness curve step function (or color curves V) to map all but absolute black to white, then convert to 8-bit BW. The result needed only a small amount of touch up.

I have a little more information. I see this problem happen with PWP 5.015 on my 64-bit vista computer and with PWP 3.5 on my XP computer (both Dells, both with NVIDIA video cards, though different models, one with a Dell wireless mouse, the other with a wired Kensington mouse). It happens regardles...

The cursor is diagonal arrows. This is not a case of accidentally moving the whole rectangle or one side. This is a case of moving (say) the lower right point of the rectangle and seeing it AND the upper left point moving at the same time in different directions. Again, this is happening for me only...

The mask rectangle tool misbehaves for me when I work zoomed in to 5:1. I expect the corner of the rectangle diagonally opposite from the mouse to remain fixed as I move the mouse to define the box I want. I duplicated the problem, but only by changing step 6 to shift-click on the sharpen transform to call up the default. The display then shows the method as bilateral sharpen, but does not display the blur radius, blur threshold, etc sliders.
