My apology if this has been suggested before: Have you ever finished with an image only to decide later on that it was too “harsh” because of too much edge contrast? It may not be necessary to start over again. Create a hi-pass blur (r~3); generate the negative of the hi-pass blur; and composite the negative with your image using the soft light blend mode.
