pencil sketch

Every once in a while, I encounter an image for which I’d like to generate a corresponding pencil sketch. Usually, applying an edge transformation (Roberts (or sometimes Sobel), HSV) followed by converting to the negative is a good step in that direction. However, that approach tends to yield excessive line widths and densities at high contrast boundaries. I have tried both selective and nonselective approaches to modifying both the original image and the “pencil sketch”, but have not found a satisfactory PWP method.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried a Texture mask? You can start by putting the white and black carat sliders near each other around a point where the histogram falls to near zero. Gray | Negative the mask.
