OT -- An alternate search utility for Vista

Post by den »

Having several HDDs that are both indexed and non-indexed, I find the Windows Vista 'Search' difficult to quickly request and mentally sort results... in searching for a easier utility... freeware 'Agent Ransack 2010' both in 32-bit and 64-bit versions came to the top and thought it might be of interest to others...

I can now more understandably search the drives for images and/or documents because the suggested utility functions more like the older Win OS search utilities...

Hi Den,

I use "Everything" from http://www.voidtools.com .

It is very fast, but it's only for local HD's, and only for NTFS-formatted drives.
Also, there is a portable version (no installation required).

And, it's freeware.

Have a look at Index Your Files http://www.indexyourfiles.com/

This program creates indexes which you can define and have full control over. You can then select which indexes to search. Index creation is very quick and you can schedule the index updates at your convenience. I like this control.

Finally, it can index any drive (NTFS, FAT, networked, etc.)
