Re: Best capture technhique and processing tools ?

In my experience taking RAW images will always give the best results. There are a couple of stops of exposure available to work with which is lost when using JPG. With RAW you can change the white balance and take advantage of extra bits of data captured by some cameras. Most cameras have 12-bit sen...

Re: JPEG XR

I did some research and discovered this is a Microsoft-created format. It may be open but probably only supported on the Windows platform. JPG2000 seems to be very similar and maybe even superior. If I had to choose a format I would go for JPG2000. Either way, it looks like JPG will dominate for los...

Re: Video editing advice

I think the answer would depend on the camera in use. You will find that all (or most) consumer video cameras compress the video using a similar format to JPG but with special functionality for video. This is specially true of HD cameras. The compression is lossy and the cameras usually give options...

Re: Video editing advice

I have always found that http://www.videohelp.com/ has all the answers I have ever asked. As for software I purchased Adobe Premiere Elements which does a really good job of video editing. Premiere Elements requires a bit of leraning but the results are very good. You will need a fast machine with a...

Re: JPG/PPW preview extracted from RAW

Another great viewer that extracts JPG from RAW is IrfanView. You can also get a great free JPG extracter called Instant JPG From RAW which is available from: http://mtapesdesign.com/rawworkflowcom-download-page/ IJFR is a small plugin to Windows Explorer and works a treat!

Re: UniWB - Practical Use?

Here is a very comprehensive article on UniWB and includes details on custom WB:

There are also RAW files available to download for a number of cameras to be use as custom WB images.

Re: UniWB - Practical Use?

Tomczak, I read an article on UniWB that describes a very easy way of setting up your camera to show a histogram on the RAW data. The idea is to create a custom WB that has the RGB multipliers all set to 1 so that no change is made to the RAW file for WB. The quickest way to get this custom WB is to...

Re: UniWB - Practical Use?

Tomzcak, In PWP RAW, setting WB to 'No WB' is the same as 'Camera WB' I don't think this is correct but I may be wrong. I believe that 'Camera WB' is what the camera would use when generating a JPG in-camera, i.e. the WB set for the thumbnail. Setting WB to 'No WB' I think is what the RAW would look...

Re: UniWB - Practical Use?

I have been following the topic of UniWB for a while and Tonczak's comments just above my post is exactly how I understand the whole thing. Now here is something else to think about: most of us have heard of 'exposing to the right' but fairly recently there has been some discussion that disputes the...
